Letters From The Trenches

For 6 years, from the spring of 2018 to the fall of 2024, I blogged in real-time about every move I made in my own personal portfolio. This was a somewhat harrowing experience. It is not easy putting it all out there on the line for everyone to see. I had my share of missteps but fortunately, once the dust had settled, I enjoyed far more successes than I did failures. In the final accounting, my portfolio had tripled in size and I had outperformed the benchmark Russell 2000 index by 12% annually.

As you can see if you read through these posts, I did not hold back on the word count. My primary goal was to educate and inform. Theory is one thing but as Mike Tyson once said, "everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face." This applies very much to the world of investing. The market threw quite a few punches over these 6 years. The 2 years leading up to the covid pandemic were marked by a sluggish economy, the "retail apocalypse" and one of the worst relative showings for value investing on record. We then had the pandemic which threatened to sink us all back into a Great Depression. The market plunged by 40% over the course of a few weeks as investors radically adjusted their expectations downwards. But then governments around the world stepped in and launched a torrent of stimulus. Stock prices skyrocketed back up. Inflation surged higher. Some sectors boomed while others were left behind. War broke out in Ukraine. Oil prices fluctuated maniacally. The word "unprecedented" was thrown around an awful lot.

In retrospect, I couldn't have picked a better time to showcase all the real-world tribulations and triumphs that come from being a dedicated value investor. I hope that these posts will stand the test of time and will give new investors a valuable insight into how one person successfully managed a stock portfolio through the chaotic mess that is the real world.
